The heaviest block on the knowledge paper
On the journeyman NEC Knowledge portion, three areas tie for the heaviest at ten scored items each: branch circuits and conductors, electrical wiring methods and materials, and electrical equipment and devices. Two of those three are this hub. Special occupancies adds another six. Our bank holds one hundred and forty questions here, ninety-five of them in the top two difficulty bands.
The Texas journeyman exam is two separately scored papers taken in one sitting. NEC Knowledge is 56 scored items inside 59 sat, with 130 minutes on the clock. Calculations is 24 scored inside 26 sat, with 110 minutes. Each half passes at 70 percent on its own, so you can clear one and rebook the other. For fiscal 2025 TDLR reports 24.46 percent passing the knowledge portion and 20.56 percent passing calculations, out of 26,303 attempts across every Texas electrical exam that produced 6,181 passes.
The shape the questions take
Twelve of the one hundred and forty ask which article or section governs, and seven of those twelve offer four bare numbers with no other help. That is a navigation test wearing the clothes of a code question. The rest describe an installation and ask what the code requires, and the work is recognizing which article the description belongs to before you open anything.
The 2026 move that catches everyone
Switches landed in Article 406 Part III for the 2026 edition. Study material written for a 2023 book sends you to Article 404. Two items in our bank test exactly that, and both sit in the hardest difficulty band.
The twenty-one topics
- Chapter 3 is twelve of your eighty scored items, and it is laid out to a template. Chapter 3 by article, and which one the stem has described without naming.
- The spacing questions are won on what counts as wall space, and lost on the arithmetic nobody checks. 210.52 measured along the wall line, with the openings that reset it.
- Two letters on the face of a receptacle carry more items than the spacing rules do. Article 406 after the move, and the configurations that get asked.
- Your paper is written against a book where the light switch and the fused disconnect live in different articles. Switches landed in Article 406 Part III for 2026, and the tab that matters is 404.1(B).
- Four question shapes come out of a three-way, and each one turns on a different section. One bank item touches multi-location switching, and it tests 210.70.
- What a Texas candidate needs to know about 4-way switch wiring before test day. No standalone four way item exists, so the article move is what gets asked.
- What a Texas candidate should settle about closet luminaires before test day. Two lookups: the Article 100 definition, then the 410.16 clearance.
- What a Texas candidate needs to know about NEC 110.26 before test day. 110.26 answers six separate questions, and depth is only one of them.
- What a Texas candidate needs to know about disconnecting means before test day. In sight from has a 50 foot half, and 110.25 sets the lock conditions.
- What a Texas candidate should know about enclosure types before test day. The phrase appears three times in the bank and is the wrong answer all three times.
- Wet, damp and dry locations on the Texas journeyman exam, and where the classification hides. The classification usually sits in an answer choice, which is where it baits you.
- Where the physical damage rule lives in the 2026 code, and what an old tab costs you in the exam room. 300.6 in the 2026 book, with no fixed offset from the old numbers.
- Hazardous classified locations on the Texas journeyman exam, and the order the questions are built on. Class, division and group in 500.5, plus the six items that use it as a decoy.
- Article 517 on the Texas journeyman exam, and the redundancy every item in it is built around. 517.13 wants two grounding paths, and the item asks which two.
- Pools, spas and Article 680 on the Texas journeyman exam, and why the wrong answers come from a different article. 680.26 bonding is about equalizing potential, and three of its items sit under grounding.
- Marinas, NEC 555.35 and the one ordering a Texas item is built on. Article 555 is short, the bank holds three items, and they are worth knowing.
- Agricultural buildings, NEC 547, and the scope decision that answers most of the item. Article 547, the equipotential plane, and the conditions that trigger it.
- Photovoltaic systems, NEC 690.12 rapid shutdown, and the three cheapest items on a Texas paper. 690.12 rapid shutdown, and the boundary the item draws.
- Temporary installations, NEC Article 590, and the belief that costs Texas candidates marks. Article 590 permits and removes, and the GFCI rule that follows the work.
- Emergency and standby systems: the classification question a Texas item is really asking. Article 700 transfer timing, and a 2026 article number our sources disagree on.
- Overcurrent device types: the four words, the four devices, and what a Texas item does with them. Inverse time, current limiting, HACR, and which one the stem needs.
The topics that exist to be wrong answers
Three of these are more useful as decoy training than as subjects. Enclosure type appears in exactly three of the five hundred questions and is the wrong answer in all three. Location classification appears in thirteen, and in ten of those the classifying words sit only in an answer choice. Hazardous location language appears in thirteen, six of which use it purely as a decoy.
That is worth knowing because a candidate who studies enclosure types hard will start choosing it. The page explains why item writers use it that way, which protects more marks than the subject matter itself.
The topic the outline undercounts
The published outline gives control devices and disconnecting means one of the fifty-six scored knowledge items and one of the twenty-four calculation items. Fifty-two of the five hundred questions in our bank mention a disconnect, thirty-one of them inside this area, filed under other headings. The disconnect rules turn up inside motor questions, service questions and equipment questions, which means the published weight understates how often the knowledge is needed. Disconnecting means covers the fifty foot half of in sight from and the 110.25 lock conditions.
What to do with this before test day
This area rewards a navigation map more than memorization. Twenty of fifty-six scored items come from here and the questions are recognizable by article, so the win is turning a description into an article number fast. Tab Chapter 3 by article, tab 110.26, and know that switches moved. Then work timed sets, because two point two minutes an item is the real constraint. Thirty free questions, timed will show whether recognition or lookup is your slower step.
The section-level detail for each topic is in the question set.
Questions people ask
What is the heaviest subject area on the Texas journeyman exam?
Three tie at ten of the fifty-six scored items each on the NEC Knowledge portion: branch circuits and conductors, electrical wiring methods and materials, and electrical equipment and devices. Together that is thirty of the fifty-six. Two of those three are wiring methods and installations, and special occupancies adds another six. Weighted by the published outline, this is where more than half of the knowledge portion comes from, and our bank reflects that with one hundred and forty of five hundred questions.
Did switches move in the 2026 code?
Switches landed in Article 406 Part III for the 2026 edition, which Texas adopted effective 1 September 2026. Study material written against a 2023 book sends you to Article 404 for the same material, and two questions in our bank test that move directly, both in the hardest difficulty band. The tab worth having is 404.1(B), which is where the scope now points. As with the rest of the 2026 renumbering, the reliable habit is finding the material by its title.
Should I study enclosure types for the Texas exam?
Lightly, and for a different reason than you would expect. The phrase enclosure type or enclosure rating appears in exactly three of the five hundred questions in our bank, and in all three it is a wrong answer: on a service equipment marking item, a vehicle impact item and a hazardous location temperature class item. Knowing why item writers reach for it as a distractor is worth more than knowing the ratings. The subject itself earns about an hour.
How many questions are on disconnecting means?
The published outline gives control devices and disconnecting means one of the fifty-six scored knowledge items and one of the twenty-four calculation items, which understates how often the knowledge is needed. Fifty-two questions in our five hundred mention a disconnect and thirty-one of those sit inside wiring methods and installations, filed under other headings. The rules surface inside motor questions, service questions and equipment questions, so the two published items are a poor guide to study time here.
What is the fastest way to prepare for the wiring methods portion?
Build a navigation map first, ahead of memorizing rules. Twelve questions in this area ask which article or section governs, and seven of those offer four bare numbers with no other help, which makes them pure navigation. The rest describe an installation, and the work is recognizing which article the description belongs to before you open the book. At about 2.2 minutes an item on the knowledge portion, the recognition step is where the time is either found or lost.
The practice exam runs thirty questions free and the full bank of 500 is $79 once. If your book is the 2023 edition, the section crosswalk is $29.
